MISS HAPS: What causes a staggering $900 Million in damages and injuries each year?

Every cause needs a champion. Meet “Miss Haps” - our very own Sultana of Safety, Queen of Caution and Princess of Preparedness.

Each issue she’ll tackle a different safety issue in her own unique style.

What causes a staggering $900 Million in damages and injuries each year? If you guessed Nick Nolte at an art museum on St. Paddy’s day, you’d be close, but wrong. It’s runway excursions. They’re not as fun to talk about as our good friend Nick, but the damage is real my friends.

Nearly a third of business aviation accidents occur on the runway, making this the most likely accident you’ll ever experience in a plane. The good news, of course, is they’re mostly survivable, but they’re still cause for concern.

Here’s the rub though: they’re almost all preventable if you stick to stabilized approach and landing criteria and use accurate and timely runway condition data. In other words, you’re in the clear if you can stick to the plan and keep your avionics equipment up to snuff.

So stay prepared my pets!

And don’t wind up a runway reject.
